Serve Like Jesus (By Dan Adams)

To be like Jesus…it’s one of our highest callings, greatest challenges, and supreme privileges. To be like Jesus has been, and will continue to be, my life-long goal. Christians often talk about being Christ-like. But what does that really look like? I want practical steps.
I was recently reminded, while watching some of the students that I serve, exactly what it means to be like Jesus. And it wasn’t just one or a couple of them. And it wasn’t one isolated instance. I’ve been noticing a defining characteristic among many of them, regularly. They love to serve. Now this is something we emphasize with them regularly, year after year. But right now, they “get it”. They get what it means to serve the world in Jesus’ name.
Like a proud father, I’ve been taking a step back to enjoy seeing this in them. The reason this brings me so much joy is because I believe that their servant’s heart is really very Christ-like. Because of this, I find myself telling them recently and often, “You look a lot like Jesus when you serve like that.”

In the last few months I’ve seen our students serve in so many ways: on mission trips to Indianapolis and Haiti, our children on their fall campout to Stony Glen, at our New Member’s welcome lunch, at our Hot Food Ministry, and the list goes on and on. They’re not serving out of obligation. They’re not serving because they have to get community service hours. They’re serving because they’re learning to live and love like Jesus does.
Mark 10:45 tells us, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served
but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
Serving was a defining characteristic for Christ, and served as His mission in so many ways. We see Jesus healing the blind, the lame, and the lepers.
We see Jesus healing men, women, and children. We see Jesus, time after time, putting others and their needs before Himself. He served the world
in love.

That’s one of the reasons that we emphasize serve so strongly at PHBC.
We actively encourage everyone to “Serve the World in Jesus’ Name”.
We believe that’s one of the ways we can best be like Jesus. We believe that’s what Jesus would do, and we want to be like Him.

I want to encourage you to be like Jesus, and one of the best ways to do this is to find a place to serve. There are plenty of opportunities. If you’re not sure how, let me know, I’m glad to help you find a place serve. I look forward to saying to you, “You look a lot like Jesus when you serve like that.”
