“Be Still…” (By Matt Vince)

Babies are such a joy. My wife and I just marked our son’s one-month milestone this week. There are so many lessons that the Bible teaches, particularly in our relationship with God as our Father, that took on a whole new meaning as I became a father for the first time with my daughter.

But as I’ve reflected on this first month of my son’s life, I have been most struck by the reminder of a baby’s total dependence on his parents; Alexander has total trust in us.

There’s a phrase from Psalm 46 that we hear a lot; it’s printed on T-shirts and mugs, and we’ve probably even said it more than once. It starts in verse 10 and says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”

But when you examine this phrase in its context with verses 9-11, it seems so very applicable to our world today.

“He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire. ‘Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!’ The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah” (ESV)

There are many things in the world that can cause us great anxiety and stress. Military conflicts, political arguments, social discord, and the list go on and on. And while we certainly should be active to do our part to help be peacemakers in all the areas that God gives us influence, we must not forget who is still in control over all of these things!

At the end of the day, we ought to be able to sleep soundly, because we are ultimately being held by our Heavenly Father, who knows our needs better than we do, and who has it all under control. Jesus further reminded us of this in Matthew 7:11 when He says, “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (ESV)

So who are you trusting to take care of you, your needs, and your world? Are you trusting or expecting yourself to take care of it all? Maybe you’re trusting the government to do it? You only need to trust the King of Kings, who is also your Heavenly Father, to handle your needs. He won’t let you down!
