Have you ever walked away from a Sunday morning sermon thinking, “He was preaching directly to me, how did he know?!” When it’s a sermon filled with love, compassion, and hope, that’s a very encouraging feeling. Other times, it’s quite different, leaving us feeling challenged and convicted, and rightly so.
Based on some of the conversations, and my personal experience, I know Pastor Shane’s series “Baggage” has been resonating with many of us. (If you’ve missed any of the messages, you can find them HERE.)
Releasing the baggage of emotional hurt, addictions, depression, and the burdens from the past can be challenging. But there is hope and help from God! Over the past few weeks I’ve been encouraged by, and have shared these verses of encouragement with various people who want to be released from the past.
If you’re carrying around baggage from the past, a burden that is weighing you down, remember this – your past doesn’t have to define you or rule over you. Scripture is clear – we are more than conquerors. Take a few minutes to meditate on the following verses, and let them guide your thinking and actions today.
- So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. (Romans 8:1-2 NLT)
- In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angles nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:37-39)
- The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:56-57)
- “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
- “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
Through Jesus Christ we have been forgiven and set free. We are more than conquerors. Today you get to do more than survive – you get to thrive, through Him.
