The Christmas season is a special time of the year for many reasons. One of my favorite parts of this time of the year are the Christmas songs. When it comes to Christmas songs, there is no shortage of variety.

   

The spectrum of songs go from the silly, fun songs like “Frosty the Snowman” and “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”, to the theologically rich and Christ-centered songs such as “Silent Night” and “Away in a Manger.”

    

Christmas songs may seem like a fairly new tradition – however, the birth of Jesus was surrounded by songs of praise delivered by the participants of His birth.  

    

We are probably most familiar with the chorus of angels who announced the news of the Messiah’s birth to the shepherds who were taking care of their flocks at night.

    

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” (Luke 2:13-14, emphasis added).

    

The chorus that those angels sang that night so many years ago was the fulfillment of a long awaited promise that one day the Savior of the world would come. Never has there been a more beautiful and more important song.

    

While that may be the most familiar of the Christmas songs in the Bible, there are others. This Christmas season at PHBC, we are going to begin a new series entitled, “The Songs of Christmas” as we take a look at three songs that were sang by people whose lives were changed dramatically by the news of the Messiah’s birth.  

    

Each of these songs are filled with timeless truths that can serve to bolster our faith today and give us a firmer understanding of the richness of our salvation that we have received through Jesus.   

       

So, whether it be in person or online, I invite you to join us for our new series , “The Songs of Christmas”, and once again be reminded why this truly is the most wonderful time of the year.
